Jakarta: Indonesia is making significant strides in building a more literate society through its long-term National Literacy Roadmap 2021–2045, alongside targeted partnerships and digital skills initiatives aimed at strengthening both foundational and digital literacy nationwide.

National Literacy Roadmap: Vision 2045
The roadmap, launched as part of Indonesia’s strategic development goals, aims to instill a culture of reading and writing across generations. It addresses key challenges in literacy acculturation and lays out policy directions for sustainable human resource and cultural development.
KREASI Initiative: Focus on Early Childhood Education
In March 2025, Indonesia launched KREASI (Collaboration for Indonesian Children’s Education) in partnership with Save the Children and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). This project enhances literacy and numeracy outcomes at the Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Primary School (SD) levels by strengthening curricula, teaching practices, school leadership, and child protection systems.

Digital Literacy Development
To keep pace with technological change, the government is also advancing digital literacy education. A recent diagnostic report highlights the need to reform education and training policies to equip citizens with job-relevant digital skills and promote lifelong learning.
Literacy by the Numbers
As of 2025, Indonesia’s literacy rate stands at 96.67%, according to BPS-Statistics Indonesia. Out of a total population of 281.56 million, more than 272 million people are now literate—reflecting progress in both access and quality of education.
These combined efforts underscore Indonesia’s commitment to ensuring all citizens are equipped for future success through robust literacy programs across all age groups.
