Big Drops for Australian Universities
This year’s rankings show major shifts. A surprising 69% of Australian universities dropped in position. For example:
- University of Melbourne dropped from 12th to 19th
- University of Sydney fell from 18th to 25th
Experts say this decline may be due to financial issues, government policy changes, and global politics.

Asia on the Rise – India Makes Big Gains
Meanwhile, Asian universities are climbing up the list.
- India now has 54 universities in the QS rankings, up from 46 last year and just 11 in 2014 – a 390% increase in 10 years
- IIT Delhi is now India’s highest-ranked university at 123rd, ahead of IIT Bombay and IIT Madras
China, Singapore, and Malaysia have also shown strong growth thanks to increased investment and focus on research.
“Rankings Matter, But So Does Support”
International students say university rankings help them decide where to apply. Many use rankings to compare:
- Academic reputation
- Research quality
- Job opportunities after graduation
But students also feel that rankings sometimes ignore other important things, like:
- Good teaching
- Mental health support
- Cost of living and housing
Some worry that higher rankings mean more competition and more stress.
What Universities Are Doing
Top universities are now working harder to:
- Improve their global reputation
- Boost research output
- Offer better student support
Institutions like McGill University (now Canada’s top-ranked university at 27th) are also reshaping their strategies to stay competitive.
